The Botanical Garden and Arboretum is a teaching and purpose-built facility belonging to Mendel University in Brno. It was established in 1938 by Prof. Augustin Bayer, on an area of 2 ha; in 1967, it was extended to its current area of 11 ha. The site is divided into five themed parts. The arboretum’s collections comprise up to 4000 orchid taxa, 300 Tillandsia taxa, 200 perennials, 350 cultivars of large-flowered iris, 500 rock plants and wood plant taxa. The garden is situated at an altitude of 220 m – 250 m, with an average annual rainfall of 547 mm and average annual temperature of 8.4°C. The subsoil is of marl, the surface of loess with a high CaO content; in part, plants are set in an artificial embankment that is the result of clay-mining.
