The Pálava area lies at the centre of the ancient cultural landscape of south Moravia, a place with one of the longest histories of settlement in the Czech lands. The harmonious topography of the Pálava Protected Landscape Area is dominated by the Pavlov Hills. It comprises a major part of the natural or little-affected steppeland ecosystem; it also contains many monuments testifying to historical human settlement.
Precious biotopes – of rocky, sod, meadow and forest steppe, thermophilic oak and scree woodland, all of which support a wealth of species – have evolved here on the limestone Pavlov Hills. The Milovice forest complex comprises thermophilic oaks and Pannonian hornbeams, with two reserves for the breeding of wildlife. The flat valley of the River Dyje (Thaya) alternates riparian forest with meadow and other wetland or aquatic communities. Slanisko u Nesytu, in the southern part of the Protected Landscape Area, is one of the last localities with halophytic vegetation.
