The mission of the Masaryk University’s Mendel Museum is to spread the legacy of the Augustinian monk Gregor Johann Mendel, known for the studies he conducted on plants, above all the pea. Thanks to his perseverance, diligence and analytical approach to his study of genetic transmission in the pea and other plants, Mendel has become an enduring icon of modern biology and is rightly considered the father of genetics. Nor should his research in meteorology and the breeding of bees be overlooked.  

For visitors interested in the garden and Mendel’s work, the museum provides a conducted tour, including access to the abbot’s gardens and the apiary, which otherwise are not open to the public.

Those looking for a place in which to relax can take advantage of pleasant outdoor seating in the shade of a plane tree – at the very place where Mendel’s greenhouse once stood. Here, visitors can enjoy the excellent coffee and desserts provided by the local café.
