The Podyjí National Park is Moravia’s only national park, a status it attained by order of the Government of Czechoslovakia on 1 July 1991, when it assumed a precious portion of the former Podyjí Protected Landscape Area. At 63 km2 in area, it is the smallest national park in the Czech Republic. It extends along the banks of the River Dyje (Thaya) through the 40-kilometre-long, deep, meandering valley between Vranov nad Dyjí and Znojmo. On the south-eastern edge of the park, in a line connecting Znojmo with Hnanice, is a zone of rare steppe heathland.
The park is remarkable for its unique geomorphology and the fine state of preservation of the Dýje canyon. We find here almost 42 km of almost uninhabited torrent valley – making this the best-preserved and least-spoiled river valley in Czechia. There is a Visitor Centre in the former Finance Guard office at the edge of the village of Čížov, which lies on the busiest tourist route to Austria and is about 6 km from Vranov nad Dyjí. Next to the Visitor Centre are remnants of the ‘Iron Curtain’ – the only monument of its type in South Moravia.
