The Moravian Karst is the largest and most heavily karstified area in the Czech Republic. The local landscape is characterized by flat areas with many sinkholes separated by deep, canyon-like troughs. The northern part of the Moravian Karst is drained by the River Punkva and its tributaries. It includes a cave system known as Amateur Caves, which (together with caves immediately adjacent) is 35 km in length, making it one of the largest cave systems in central Europe. The middle part of the Moravian Karst comprises a main cave system known as the Rudice Sink (Býčí skála), which is 12 km long.
The best-known cave in the southern part of the Karst is the Ochoz Cave, which is almost 2 km in length. We now know that there are over 1100 caves in the Moravian Karst. Evidence of a settlement of Neanderthals over 120,000 years ago has been found in the Kůlna Cave. Also worthy of note are the engravings of horses and bison discovered on horses’ ribs in the Pekárna Cave. The following caves are open to the public: Punkevní, Kateřinská, Balcarka, Výpustek, Sloupsko-šošůvské.
