Both garden and villa were designed by celebrated architect Dušan Jurkovič for his family and friends. Along with the villa, the garden has been restored in accordance with the original plans; it was opened to the public in 2011. The garden’s character is determined by the fruit trees which supplement the beds of roses and other perennials that bloom in the course of the year. At the edges of the garden are its utilitarian parts, which include a vine and currant bushes.

Subsequently, the garden developed from a formal parterre de broderie to a romantic arrangement typical of the 19th century. Until the

Bučovice Chateau

SOUTH MORAVIA

The geometric (formal) garden is in front of the chateau’s west façade. It originated between 1567 and 1575, as part of the walled-in grounds of the chateau. It was first mentioned in writing in 1613. The grounds as a whole testify to the original design of the chateau in the style of the late Italian Renaissance (palazzo in fortezza). They include a Renaissance-style garden, castle walls with bastions and a moat. Unlike most Renaissance chateaux in the Czech Republic, Bučovice is not a remodelling of an older residence such as a

Kunštát Chateau

SOUTH MORAVIA

The garden and park are integral parts of the Kunštát Chateau, which has been declared a national monument. Records kept from the 17th to the 20th century show that the original Flower Garden in Renaissance style was modified in the course of the 19th century. The park was established at the end of the 18th century.
